Grade Recieved and Thoughts on Critique

Today I received my grade for the roadside assignment (I don't have a picture yet, but I'll upload one later). I was....hoping for a little higher, but I can easily pull up an 85, so overall, I'm satisfied.

We also critiqued the colored pencil portrait today. The whole student-lead critique idea was actually fun. I mean, some of my classmates were less than thrilled, but I, for one, loved it. Nothing gets you out of your comfort zone more than an impromptu presentation. Plus, this will get me ready for when I present my ideas to various companies.

project 1: color

This is what I have so far. To finish before next class though, I need to purchase two pencils. I borrowed a couple colors from a classmate, and now... they're essential to its completion. I just hope Asel has them in stock...

Dang... this might work out... :D

Prismacolor colored pencil color wheel

Here it is, folks: my first work done with berol prismacolor. I gotta say... I kinda like them. They blend beautifully. My favorite section is the tone, which is color plus gray. My least favorite is shade, or color plus black. Tone makes it smooth and muted, but my shade job almost devours the color. Lastly, I added the gray rings around the color rings, just as a small accent.

project 1 black and white complete

Here is the finished black and white value tracing of Shalhoub. Overall, I'm quite pleased with how it turned out, but I have to confess that I'm more comfortable with graphite than I am with colored pencil. In fact, I've never used berol prismacolor pencils. I just hope I pay enough attention to detail that this doesn't end up reflecting poorly on this work here.

Tracing in Pencil: project 1 part 1

Here's what I have up to this point for the tracing of Tony Shalhoub. What I'll do next is darken up the right side of his face, adding a bit more depth and contrast. Also, I'll add in the rest of his jacket and a dark background to improve visibility of the leftmost cheek and the ear.

photo for project 1

Here's the pic I'm using for this project. He is actor Tony Shalhoub. This pose is in character for his hilarious portrayal of detective Adrian Monk. As of right now, my biggest challenge is to get the picture to print properly. No matter what I do, my printer spits it out with the colors slightly muddled.

My focus will be primarily on the shadows created by the muddling. with any luck, once I go to the color version I'll have a better copy (probably printed off at the school) to reference.
